I feel that, usually, Dylan's original recording , is the better , but live, usually the Dead's versions were far more committed to Dylan's songs than he was, Jerry especially "got" Dylan, and Dylan himself felt that way . It is a shame they didn't try to work up some of Dylan's later stuff, I remember Weir saying that was something they were tossing about .
I always felt that , even when they had a large catalog of their own songs, they played covers, as much out of a sore of musical humility, tipping their hats to the past; and the root of my calling those "cover" songs Billy did, "originals" , is that the Dead so made those songs their own .
I did have a problem, that later , they started covering "classic rock" songs, that usually were not that original in choice , and in execution .
Yes, Weir's restricted song choice was sometimes bothersome .
